The foreground figure is my Great Uncle Willie Eunson and behind him is older brother Robbie. This is one of the lower parks at Grindiscol in Bressay, They originally came from Traewick in Whalsay, which was abandoned in the early twentieth century after they refused to have the new road through their village and the village died as a result. My Uncle Robbie was at the wheel of the Clan Ferguson when she was torpedoed in the famous Malta Convoy, Pedestal. Although he landed on islands off a neutral coast in Africa, they were taken off by the Italians and ended up as prisoners of war in Italy. Later, as the Allies moved up through Italy, they were moved to prisoner of war camps in, I think Poland. Then, when the Russians started advancing, they were force marched towards the west. If you fell behind, you were taken to the side of the road and shot. My uncle had dysentry and his life was basically saved by his friend and neighbour. When they were repatriated, the Bressay community threw them both a big party at the Bressay Hall and presented them each £5 if I remember correctly! My uncles digestive system was never right for the rest of his life as a result of his experience. However, although he chain smoked all his life, he still survived till his seventies!
